Here's some shots of my first attempt. Didn't take any shots of my 2nd attempt cause it turned out the same as the first..
Using my birthday present for the first time.. trying to achieve the 'ribbon stage' whipping.. |
I cracked about seven eggs for each of the first two attempts. That's a lot of eggs.. & I'm well aware of that. (._. ) But this being my virgin swiss roll attempt, sticking to the recipe was my safest bet. Cause I've never made any sponge cakes before either. Neither have I whipped whole eggs to what is called the 'ribbon stage'.
gross result.. |
That, my dear friends, is what I got at the end. Some kind of kueh looking flat piece of unbaked horror. Had this result twice in a row. Truly, I do not understand combining the roux and genoise method. Thinking back, I probably didn't mix everything out evenly cause I used a spatula instead of a balloon whisk. Will probably not attempt this method for awhile now, cause the amount of eggs used is just horrifying!
Did some more homework and found the common method is simply.. genoise.
Swiss roll base success! \(^▽^@)ノ totally baked! *sproing sproing!* |
I used a pan size smaller than what the recipe called for. Thus the sponge looks a lot like a mattress. haha! Which wasn't much of a surprise that it split when I rolled it. (>,< )
pretty vanilla & strawberry buttercream swiss roll |
heh. I know~ I forgot to leave an inch without filling. But the sponge is pretty awesome all the same. I just need to figure out an equally awesome filling that isn't as sweet. I wonder if lemon curd will be good.. hmm.. ..
Here comes the random attempt at the pokeball!
from my instagram |
Not the most glamorous but it tastes pretty good! It's a quick and no fuss trial for Junie's up coming birthday celebration. hehe!
Sadly, during the making of the successful swiss roll, my hand/stand mixer was becoming quite scary. The beater/whisk attachment was wobbling one one side. Super freaky. I kept imagining it dislodging from the machine and shoot out into my eye or something. (/.\)
Sent it in for repair just yesterday.. so I guess the dining table will have a bit of peace for a while. Till my mixer come back home. haha
arm breaker, shoulder stiffen-er..
